10-21-88 Reunion Arena, Dallas, TX

The Dead didn't play Texas much in their 30 year career but when they did, the sparks flew. This show, on Brent Mydland's 36th birthday, shows that the band could pull off great shows with somewhat unusual set lists.

The first set starts with a nice version of Let The Good Times Roll. The band then gets underway with a hot Feel Like A Stranger->Franklin's Tower. Walkin' Blues is up next with Bob and the boys pulling all their energy. Believe It Or Not is a classic Jerry tune that was introduced live in June but, unfortunately, didn't last that long in the band's rotation. It was written for what would become the Built To Last album but didn't make the cut. Bummer! Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again gives us some Dylan content and would end up become a rarity in later years although it was played a lot at the time. Dupree's Diamond Blues WAS a rarity and is something I like to hear anytime. Jack Straw is good and is rare as a set ender during this era.

The second set starts with a Happy Birthday Brentski cheer before getting down to business with Wang Dang Doodle which was still a bit rare at the time. Victim Or The Crime->Foolish Heart is a really nice combo and gives the Texas crowd a another view of the new stuff. Man Smart, Woman Smarter is okay. The Drums->Space segment is very good. I'm not a big fan of I Will Take You Home but if you like it, then you'll like this one. The Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad->All Along The Watchtower shreads with the boys of fire with some really great "Southern" licks. Stella Blue is once again, heartfelt while Sugar Magnolia brings the set to a close on a happy note. Brokedown Palace is one of my all time favourites.
